Lynn Doctor's
Truck Stuff

6/2008 I am getting in my first 2 repos' in years. In this case a
couple of T2000's (my least favorite Kenworth) from a Chinese couple out of Chicago.
A couple of yeasrs ago, I worked for months to get them financed as first
time small fleet owners. One truck, then a year or so later a second truck. I
wanted to see what it would take to crack into the Chinese trucking community.
In this case, it looks like it was not worth the effort... probably
because communication was so poor(I had a tough time understanding them - them me and the
drivers were impossible - speaking little or no English at all). In any case, it turned
into a looser. A driver actually torched one truck. The other is on my lot
looking a bit sad.
Hmmm. It might be best to stick with the clients who add top
value to loads. They get paid better and don't seem to fail much.
Meanwhile, I do have a bunch of Custom trucks out there getting great, NO
they are getting outstanding fuel mileage. The payments are being made and profits
are going to my clients bottom line.
Call, I can help make the numbers work for you. :)
1/2008 and I am selling more truck than I have in years... particurlarly
to small fleets...
I sell both Cat and Cummins EPA engines... but very specific engines... do
you know the tradeoffs.
CHANGES + KNOWLEDGE = OPPORTUNITY
DOUBLE DIPPING ON
PROFITS
Adding an iffy enonomy
to the fuel cost disaster and new technologies with diesel fuel and new heavy truck engine
technology has made the on highway truck owners life more complicated.
Trucking has most
always been a survival of the fittest market segment and today, some of the fit, are
scratching their head.
It becomes survival
management when key costs such as fuel swings so widely over short term
and the long term cost trend seems too high to seriously contemplate?!
OK..? how to profit
from all this mess:
All over this site I
talk about finding your niche... assuming you are in the right trucking market for you,
then:
For most, Fuel
Surchages are carrying the day, but the surcharge is a bandade... using less
fuel is a key longer term solution.
Truckers that are
using less fuel than the average amount of fuel their surcharge is based in effect
double dip... and that can be very nice.
using less fuel
After twenty years of
promoting various fuel mileage solutions... and still ONE solution
stays camped in first place... it is: CUT THE SPEED and closely following in
the number 2 position: run tires with low ROLLING RESISTANCE.
After that, the long
list of everthing else makes about as big a difference as you allow it to make. Know, for
example, that it is possible to get great fuel mileage with trucks that have square edges.
It is true that
swoshing aerodynamic designs can and do improve fuel mileage... but, less so as weights go
up or speeds go down. A driver that wants to pay attention and get fuel
savings, can do so with a classic truck... just wont be burning the highway up.
The cubic displacement
of an engine is more important than the manufacturer... and proper geaing is more
important than either of those two.
