Drivers are the irreplaceable element of profitable trucking
and have been in continuous short supply for several years. No,
today's truck drivers are not asked to drive trucks like the ones you see in the
background of many truckWeb pages. Now days most every truck has power
steering, air conditioning and even air ride seats and air ride rear axle.
A few even feature automatic transmissions.
Wow, what a change from the early years!
Companies, fleet owners large or small, are changing the way they do business to keep their truck drivers on the job. Drivers are seeing better equipped, higher horse power trucks; improved benefit and pay packages; more time at home.
Sometimes, dispatchers (they are always under the gun) are becoming more friendly and, with the driver shortage and all, even shipment receivers can act like they have a life.
The industry turnover rate for drivers still, has been greater than 100% (trucking companies have been hiring more new people each year than the number of trucks they own) for most every long haul fleet and a fair portion of the regional haul fleets since the early 90's. The competition is fierce for qualified drivers.
Still, there are degrees of driver jobs. This means that it can serve a CDL license holder well to pick his or her jobs carefully, both for the needs of today's income and tomorrows...
Because, what you learned yesterday can be very valuable today. Good luck is recognizing and taking advantage of opportunity.
And Clete says Good Luck to YOU!
